Instructions after a tooth or wisdom-tooth extraction.

This page complements the individual advice you received after your procedure. If that advice differs from the guidance below, your clinician’s instructions take priority.

What is usually normal

  • mild swelling that may increase on days two to three
  • temporary discomfort once the anaesthetic wears off
  • minor blood oozing during the first hours

When to call immediately

  • worsening pain despite the prescribed medication
  • bleeding that continues despite firm pressure
  • fever, altered sensation or rapidly increasing swelling
01

Day 1

Rest, avoid vigorous rinsing and drinking through a straw, and use cold packs through a cloth.

02

Day 3

Swelling may be at its highest. Choose soft food and return to activity only if you feel ready.

03

Day 7

If you have stitches, confirm your review appointment. Continue oral hygiene as instructed.
